Two Trades, One Kind of Problem

Furniture and clothing rarely share a workroom. Ours does, and the two turn out to ask the same question. A dining chair with a sagging seat and a jacket that pulls at the shoulder are the same problem in different materials: the covering no longer matches the shape underneath it. So we take the piece apart, measure what is actually there rather than what the pattern says should be there, and build the cover back to that. Whether it arrives on a hanger or on four legs changes the tools, not the thinking.

Gulf Coast Upholstery & Alterations sits in Foley, Alabama, a short drive from the beach towns, and most of what comes through the door arrives by word of mouth: dining sets, RV dinettes, boat seats, headboards, hems, zippers, and every so often a dress that must fit a different body than the one it was bought for. What we sell online grew straight out of that daily work.

Fabric Doesn’t Get an Easy Life Down Here

Salt air, summer humidity, and sun coming through a window all afternoon are hard on anything soft. Vinyl goes brittle at the fold. Thread chalks and lets go along a seam before the fabric beside it shows a mark. Foam takes on moisture and stops springing back. We see the results of that climate every week, and it decides what we use: marine-grade vinyls, solution-dyed acrylics, outdoor weaves that hold their color under UV, and bonded polyester thread that outlasts what it holds together. That choice is the difference between a cushion that lasts a decade and one that comes back in two summers.

What We Sew for Homes We Never Visit

What we ship is far narrower than what we do here, and that is on purpose. It is throw pillow covers, and nothing else. A pillow cover is the one soft furnishing that does not have to fit a particular frame — a cover cut to a stated size works the same in Mobile as it does in Montana, with nobody left measuring furniture and hoping. It is also where small faults show most plainly: on something at eye level on a sofa, a welt that wanders or a zipper puckering the corner is the first thing anyone sees. That suits a workroom that would rather be judged on its seams.

A Piece Isn’t Finished Until It Fits

We do not call a job done because the fabric is on it. We call it done when the welt runs straight across the front of the cushion, the pattern lines up where two panels meet, the zipper turns the corner without fighting, and the cover goes back over the foam without a fight and without a wrinkle. On alterations that means the hem is level while the customer is standing up, not while the garment lies flat on a table. Getting there sometimes means picking out a seam we sewed an hour ago. We would far rather do that here than have someone find it at home.

Growing Without Getting Big

We would like people well outside Baldwin County to get work like this, and shipping ready-made covers is how that happens. What we do not want is to become an operation where nobody looks at a piece before it goes in the box. The plan is a wider run of sizes, more fabrics that stand up to sun and salt, and few enough hands on any one order that we can still answer for it. A workroom that stays a workroom, with a longer reach.
